SOMETHING EDITORS’ NOTES

This second volume of Minutemen retrospectives includes 1983’s Buzz or Howl Under the Influence of Heat and 1985’s Tour Spiel, the two releases that bookended 1984’s Double Nickels on the Dime, widely considered their artistic pinnacle. Double Nickels split the difference between the hilariously wild and abrasive songs of Buzz (as represented by the buzzy free jazz of “Dreams Are Free Motherf*cker” and “The Product”) and the groovy, polished classic rock of Tour Spiel (as represented by “The Cheerleaders” and a shaggy cover of Steppenwolf’s “Hey Lawdy Mama”). Though part of Minutemen’s charm was their unwillingness to be predictable, both Buzz or Howl and Tour Spiel include “pop songs” amid some crazy detours. “Little Man with the Gun in His Hand” and “I Felt Like a Gringo” are as good as the best songs on Double Nickels, while “Tour Spiel” is one of their greatest autobiographical declarations: “We'd fight at practice/Then jam econo/And spout the tour-spiel.”
