While the saxophonist had turned his career around, playing with a fierce drive that was paradoxical to the cool of his old boss Miles Davis in their landmark late-‘50s time together, the aptly named Giant Steps from 1960 is the start of Coltrane the leader’s legacy as one of jazz’s greatest players. The torrential solos referred to as his patented “sheets of sound,” the tricky chord progressions (mastering those of the title track is still a jazz rite of passage), and the inclusion of several solo-driven original compositions that are now jazz classics that make this, in no uncertain terms, a landmark in recorded music.
