SOMETHING EDITORS’ NOTES

Lydia Lunch has spent her entire career as an outsider. Even as she’s become an underground cult legend, she and her music have been long considered too challenging for many. This 2014 collection is a collaboration between Lunch and guitarist Cypress Grove, who together journal through the dark side of love and life. All but three songs are originals, and the covers are songs by The Gun Club’s Jeffrey Lee Pierce (“St. Mark’s Place”), Mark Lanegan (“Revolver”), and Van Morrison (“T.B. Sheets”). Mick Cozens plays nylon-string guitars on the opening spoken-word piece, “Sandpit”; and that sense of the American southwest haunts many of the songs to follow. “When You’re Better” makes strategic use of Lunch’s limited vocal range, as Grove settles into a hypnotic post-blues feel. “Devil Winds” uses a tribal groove and guitar atmospherics to nail down its sense of mortality. “Beautiful Liar” and each ensuing song push this overall vibe, often with Grove adding mysterious instrumentation and sound to further the alienating feeling.
